What to wear guide

Hi there!

I have created this guide because I know that choosing what to wear for your family photoshoot can be a pretty daunting task! Not only do you have to choose your own outfit you have to think of outfits that will "go with" the rest of your family!

I find it easiest to start with one item of clothing and work from there. So if you have a dress or shirt that you love and want to wear - start with that! I always advise clients that the safest way to dress as to wear neutral colours as these any environment - the beach, at home or in a park.

As your photographer, I want you to love your photos. So please feel free to email me through or text me your options for outfits. I am very happy to help!

Colour

Neutrals are always my go to for family photos. You can never go wrong with white, cream, tan combined with navy to add some contrast. You will find neutrals photograph well at the beach, park and at home. Earthy tones are also great think -khaki green, rust orange, yellow and tan. Pastels are another great option and they can be mixed in with both earthy and neutral tones. The only colour I would stay away from is black, it can make your photos look a bit dull.

What type of clothing?

The other thing to consider is what you feel comfortable in. I think it's best to to imagine you are going to a daytime, outdoor party. So get a bit dressed up, but not as dressy as a wedding for example.

When it comes to footwear, bare feet are totally fine for at home and for beach shoots. Sandals are great for summer and boots in winter.

Jeans - I'm totally fine with jeans - on boys or girls. You might like to pair your jeans with a nice floaty boho style top to add some movement to the photos.

Plain tshirts, shirts and knits when its cold all look great. Skirts and dresses add a really beautiful sense of movement in your photos. I love maxi skirts and maxi dresses! For the Dads, you might like to suggest a linen shirt with chinos or jeans.

Patterns

I really love patterns, but don't overdo it. I would probably only have one person in a pattern and keep everyone else in solid colour.

What about baby?

It's best to keep it simple when dressing your baby. You want your photos to be all about baby, rather than the big bow on their head or the picture on their jumper. I really like simple growsuits. We can wrap baby up in a beautiful wrap to add some more pretty details. I love including things that might be special to you in your images, so if you have a special wrap or blanket, let’s use it!
